Qatar secured a historic first-ever World Cup point by netting a last-gasp 94th-minute equalizer to steal a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B opener at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Switzerland found their breakthrough in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo calmly converted a penalty kick following a foul by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. The Swiss were made to rue missed chances, scoring just once from 26 shots, while Abunada produced fine reaction saves and Ayoub Al Oui cleared a strike off the line before half-time.
Time seemed to be running out for Qatar, but four minutes into added time, Boualem Khoukhi crashed in a late header from a Homam Ahmed cross, which FIFA later confirmed was a Miro Muheim own goal under pressure from the Qatar captain.
All four teams in Group B now have one point through the first round of games after Canada fought out a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday. In the next games, Switzerland will face Bosnia in Los Angeles, while Qatar heads north to take on Canada in Vancouver.
