Australia stunned Türkiye with a 2-0 victory in their opening 2026 World Cup match at BC Place Vancouver. Goals in each half from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe saw Australia shock Turkey, built on resilient defending and an impressively efficient display in transition.

Turkey had 30 shots in total and 72 per cent of the possession, but lacked the cutting edge needed to break through Australia’s disciplined low block. Young goalkeeper Patrick Beach made eight saves for the Socceroos to frustrate Turkey, after being handed a surprise competitive Socceroos debut.

Watford striker Irankunda became Australia’s youngest World Cup scorer when he fired the Australians into the lead on the counter-attack, before Connor Metcalfe doubled their lead in the 75th minute with a low, powerful strike from distance.

The result puts Australia join the United States at the top of Group D ahead of the teams going head to head on Friday.
